The Benefits
of Fibreglass Reinforced Plastics (FRP)
The coming-of-age of Fibreglass Reinforced Plastics and the
high degree of confidence that FRP has won among design engineers and
architects, are paying dividends. Users realise that FRP offers excellent
performance and cost benefits for Manufacturer and Customer alike. Optimum
Performance and Cost Ratios are achieved when the designer or engineer
considers the following basic properties of FRP early in the design and
development of a new application:
- High Strength: FRP can be designed to provide a wide
range of tensile, flexural and impact strength properties.
- Lightweight: FRP can deliver more strength per unit weight
than any unreinforced plastic and most metals.
- Design Flexibility: FRP can be formed into any shape
the designer may desire- simple, complex, large or small.
- Dimensional Stablity: FRP components hold their forms and
shapes under severe mechanical and environmental stresses.
- High Dielectric Strength: the outstanding electrical
properties of FRP make this material the obvious choice for
- insulating current-carrying components.
- Corrosion Resistance: FRP will not rust nor corrode.
There are many resin systems from which to choose, depending on your
particular requirements, to provide resistance to almost every chemical
environment.
- Parts Consolidation: it is possible for a single FRP
structure to replace an assembly of many parts and associated fasteners,
thereby reducing assembly times.
- Less Finishing: painting can often be eliminated. Colour
can be moulded into the laminate for long-lasting good appearance.
- Moderate Tooling Costs: regardless of the processing
method used, tooling for FRPs usually represents a
- very small part of the product unit cost.
