CRL Energy Ltd is an energy, minerals, and environmental consulting company, with a strong research and testing base and a specialist knowledge in all aspects of the energy chain. As well as specialist knowledge in new energy technologies such as hydrogen and biomass conversion, we have a strong history in all aspects of fossil fuel energy, particularly coal research, offering research, consultancy and testing in the areas of exploration and mining, fuel quality and use, and environmental monitoring.
CRL Energy is a Telarc Registered Supplier to ISO9001. Our chemical and materials laboratories and energy test centres provide a solid practical basis for all our work. We have on-going research contracts with the Ministry of Science and Innovation, Technology New Zealand, Energy Federation of New Zealand, World Energy Council, and the New Zealand coal industry. Analysis & Testing
CRL Energy has coal testing laboratories in Lower Hutt, Greymouth and Westport. The Lower Hutt laboratory also offers a comprehensive range of testing on wood, biomass and acid rock drainage samples as well as coal preparation equipment and facilities.The SpectraChem service specialises in XRF and XRD analysis of a wide range of organic and inorganic materials and has a portable XRF for field work. We have over 20 years of experience sampling and analysing export coal shipments for New Zealand's largest coal producer. Our Lower Hutt and Greymouth laboratories offer chemical and microbiological testing of drinking water, wastewater, leachate and trade waste.
Air Quality
CRL Energy offers a comprehensive range of tests on emissions from industrial stacks. These include particulate testing, PM10, NOx, and SOx. CRL Energy can measure flow and composition of gases discharged from landfills. We also offer ambient PM10, SO2 and dust deposition gauge monitoring, as well as air dispersion modelling and assistance with environmental management plans and resource consent applications.
Geological, Geotechnical Engineering & Hydrogeological Services
The CRL Energy Geology Group offers a wide range of consulting and research services to the mining, mineral exploration and environmental management industries. Our skills and services cater to:
MSI-funded research into environmental issues surrounding mining, waste rock characterisation, water rock interaction and rehabilitation;
Acid mine drainage (AMD) remediation technologies, such as limestone dosing and wetland development schemes, to mitigate the impacts of metal pollution on water and aquatic life and habitat;
Mineral/coal exploration programme design, data collection and interpretation;
Coal seam gas exploration programme development from targeting to reservoir modelling; Mineral/coal deposit exploration, definition and modelling;
Industrial research for the mineral exploration, mining and environmental management industries; and Contaminated site assessment, hydrogeology and reporting.
Solid Fuel Combustion
CRL Energy has extensive expertise and experience in the combustion of solid fuels. Our combustion test centre offers testing programmes tailored to your needs. Using our 50kW combustion test rig we can test and evaluate fuel performance, and resulting emissions, under controlled real-world conditions. Fuels recently tested include coal, bio-waste, bio-mass (of many varieties), waste materials, and fuel blends.

Clean Energy and Advanced Energy Technologies
CRL Energy is New Zealand's leading source of expertise in technologies for the hydrogen economy. In addition to Government-funded research in developing technologies for coal-based and coal/biomass based energy production, we provide consulting services to Government and Industry in clean energy related areas. Our experienced engineering/science team is available to assist in any other energy technology development and evaluation.
Climate Change Consultancy
We have an excellent reputation in a wide range of climate change related services including research, consultancy and education. Our existing clients include energy producers and major energy users in New Zealand.
CRL Energy undertakes a wide variety of work for these clients which includes facilitation of greenhouse gas reduction projects, advice on domestic and international climate change policy, research into emissions trading and carbon dioxide sequestration, operational research into implementing greenhouse gas reduction strategies, greenhouse gas inventories, energy auditing and energy efficiency and advising on least cost greenhouse gas reduction solutions for the private sector.
Energy Modelling
EERA is an energy efficiency tool that highlights energy efficiency opportunities. It can quantify and compare energy and greenhouse gas savings of efficiency improvements and their economic viability. The model is used to construct, analyse and compare end-use energy and greenhouse gas (GHG) emission scenarios for all economic sectors and energy types, evaluate and quantify the impact of projects on the energy use and GHG emissions of scenarios through changes in equipment stock and efficiency; end-use energy type and supply energy type. Users of EERA include energy policy makers, energy supply and distribution industry, energy efficiency authorities, local and regional governments, energy researchers, energy performance contracting industry, environmental and other interested groups, and energy users.
